Successful candidates should:

Be able to function in a busy office environment;
Possess excellent typing/transcription skills;
Have knowledge of Microsoft word/Windows 2000/Microsoft Outlook;
Be prepared to answer, manage, route/direct calls for all lawyers/administrative staff;
Possess superb communications skills and excellent telephone manner;
Work well in a team environment;
Written/Oral bilingual skills an asset

Summer Students


Every year, we evaluate our staffing needs for the summer months. During these months, it may be necessary to hire staff to fill in for those on vacation, or for specialized tasks. In most cases, these positions are short-term and are ideal for students seeking summer employment. Please watch this space for student openings as they become available. Articling Clerks


We understand that the decision you make as to where you will article would be one of the most important decisions of your career. The following outlines some of the "basics" of our articling program, and answers to some of the more commonly asked questions. At Bailey and Associates, our focus is providing our clients with answers to their questions, and providing them with the best service and highest quality possible. As a smaller firm, our firm has an entrepreneurial and innovative spirit, which is traditionally absent from larger firms. Bailey and Associates is a closely-knit team of professionals who work together to assist clients with their legal problems. We realize that the law can appear very complicated to an untrained person. We help our clients understand the law and what options are available to them.

Our recently expanded offices are located on the eight floor of the Royal Bank Building, located on Portland Street in Dartmouth. This central location minimizes traffic hassles, and is close to everything you may need to access. In addition, all of the members of the firm have access to our integrated network systems and have 24/365 access to the Internet, email, and other IT services. An in-house system specialist supports our IT services. All staff also has access to QuickLaw, and other online databases for research purposes. While at Bailey and Associates, all Articling Clerks have full access to our support staff, which includes secretarial, accounting, and IT support staff.

The articling program at Bailey and Associates is custom tailored to each clerk to ensure that they derive the greatest value from the experience. Any one of our dynamic team of lawyers can be partnered with an articling clerk to provide them with the best educational and practical experience possible.

Bailey and Associates has always used a collaborative team-based approach to solve problems. We invite our clerks to be a part of this process and seek their input when making decisions. Articling clerks will work with lawyers responsible for a wide variety of matters. This allows our clerks to form the basis for a broad foundation of legal knowledge and skills. As our articling clerks mature and demonstrate their understanding of the subject matter, they will be expected to take full responsibility for a wide range of matters, including: Minor criminal matters, small claims court matters, and other similar matters.

We have always felt that law school grades are important, but are not the best indicator of success for each candidate. Therefore, we use law school grades only as one of the selection criteria when selecting candidates for interviews. We believe that the candidate's performance during the interview is the single most important factor in the selection process. After being successful in the selection process, wages and benefits will be negotiated, and a "learning plan" created for the new articling clerk.
